CUSTOM DECKS
At Deckology, we set ourselves apart by offering features and creative solutions that go beyond the standard. Many of our standard features aren't offered by other contractors or are considered add-ons.
Deckology designs and builds outdoor living spaces, incorporating decks, railings, covered porches, privacy walls, patios, firepits, and outdoor kitchens. As a premier outdoor living space contractor, we commit to only the highest quality materials that promise durability and beauty over time. From classic wood to advanced composite materials, our selections are geared towards low maintenance and high performance against Minnesota’s diverse weather conditions. Our carpenters are artisans in their trade, executing precise installation with an eye for detail that guarantees a finish that’s second to none.
Footings
We use traditional concrete footings as well as helical piles. Our traditional concrete pier footings are a minimum 20” diameter, 48” deep, poured to grade, and posts attached with mechanical post bases. No posts buried in the ground. Helical piles are a great alternative to traditional footings, with no excavation needed and are ready to build on immediately.
We frame all of our decks with joists spaced at 12” O.C. rather than the standard 16”. This gives our decks a much more solid feel and better support for composite decking. Only screws are used for fastening, there's no nailing of framing on decks. All blocking for picture frames and breaker boards get ladder framed rather than flat boards. This lets water drain between these boards much better and helps them last longer. Mid span blocking is installed to help minimize movement of individual joists and stiffen up the framing. The number of rows of blocking is dependent on the joist span, but no more than 6’ between rows.
beams
Almost all of our beams are treated LVL’s from Pacific Woodtech. This allows us to span farther between posts and make any beam one solid piece rather than splicing shorter boards over posts to make a longer beam. Pacific Woodtech also manufactures treated LVL joists to make a much stronger, straighter, flatter deck.

We install joist tape by G Tape on the tops of all framing (beam, posts, and joists) and sides that will have fascia wrap (rim, outside stringers, etc.) Joist tape helps protect deck framing from water infiltration and premature frame decay.
decking
We almost exclusively use Deckorators mineral based composite boards. These boards have virtually no thermal expansion or contraction, and are highly slip resistant when wet, making them a great option for low decks or near pools and hot tubs as they are much cooler to the touch than most other options. All of our decks will have a picture frame design around the perimeter so no cut ends of boards are visible and there is an overhang over the fascia. Any decks longer than 20’ will have a breaker board running up the center as you’ll see in our gallery. We do this so there are no staggered seams.

Marc helped us completely transform a room in our house to become a nursery. He coordinated building new interior walls, drywall for the walls and ceiling, new light fixtures, new baseboard heaters, carpet, and trim work. Everything was completed in a timely manner and all of the subcontractors were also professional and kept everything clean. Recently, in the fall of 2022, Marc Unnasch constructed a deck for us. During the initial phase, a water drainage issue surfaced. In about a day or two, it became apparent that the original execution strategy could not be followed for a quality job. Marc confidently handled the situation by consulting and engaging relevant experts, always keeping us in the loop. After a few days of a detour, Marc constructed the deck to everybody’s satisfaction. During the construction process, I was impressed by Marc’s thoroughness and passion for completing the work with quality without losing focus on cost and economics. Marc also patiently and promptly answered all our questions and concerns regarding the construction, material, etc., either verbally or using text messages. The Olmsted County inspector praised the work of Marc in all three inspections. Some of our neighbors were impressed by Marc’s work, and a couple of neighbors intend to work with him in repairing their existing decks in 2023. In 2022, Marc also worked on modernizing our Patio, which was also done very well. For all our future construction work, we will consult Marc first. Suppose you want quality construction work where the contractor will not cut corners and take pride in the finished work while keeping costs under control.
